Uncharted 3 – Launch Trailer

I can’t wait for Uncharted 3.  Uncharted 1 and the Ratchet and Clank series are what made buying a PS3 worthwhile, but Uncharted 2 surprised me by raising the bar significantly.  It is definitely on my short list of the best games I have ever played, and it even impressed my parents by being exciting enough for them to watch when I went home for the holidays.  Between the high standard of the second game and Claudia Black reprising her role as Chloe, November 1st can’t come soon enough!

Rebuying Old Games… in HD!

Since the move to HD-capable consoles, many game publishers have decided to re-release their last-gen (or in some cases, even older) games with up-scaled HD versions.  Some might consider this a cash-grab, but I think it all comes down to the effort put into the remastering.  For instance, the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus collection that I have been replaying was definitely well worth my $40.  It improves the visuals of Ico considerably (it was originally rendered at 240p on the PS2), and any frame-rate issues that were present in the original SotC have been banished.  They really do justice to the original games, without needless changes.  George Lucas should take note.

I have compiled a list of HD re-releases, as well as current-gen dual-packs, since they offer a similar value if you have not played them before.  There appears to be a bias towards the PS3 in these releases, but I think that’s because the PS2 had a much larger catalog of games than the original Xbox.  In the case of games that have already been released and that I have played, I will add my opinion, otherwise I will add links with relevant information.  Here are the old games you might look forward to buying (again): Continue reading

PSA: Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD Remakes Out!

My girlfriend asked me to explain Ico and Shadow of the Colossus to her, and that isn’t nearly as easy as explaining something like Call of Duty or Dead Rising.  You can’t just say “you kill Nazis with guns” (to me, CoD never went past WW2) or “you kill zombies with improvised weapons.”  In fact, despite there being combat in those games, I don’t think of them in terms of their violence as I do with many others.  I remember the environments of Ico and the interaction between the two characters.  I recall the majesty of the first time I saw the living monuments of each of the colossi.

These are two of the greatest examples in an argument for video games as an artform.  While most games, even ones that are a great deal of fun, don’t stand up well when evaluated artistically, I think this is because they don’t really intend to be.  The same can be said for the bulk of content in other artistic genres as well.  I challenge you to make a case for the works of Ke$ha or Michael Bay to be featured in a fine arts museum.  Ico and SotC, on the other hand, were crafted by an artistic mind, and a great deal of effort was clearly put into them both by the many who worked on them.  It is artistry and effort that shines through in epic and touching moments, and of all the games coming out with HD-remakes, I feel these two may be the most worthy.

If you haven’t played those games, I feel you owe it to yourself to give them a try if you have a PS3.  It’s $40 for the pack, and that seems an extraordinary deal.  Even though I already own PS2 copies of the two of them, it doesn’t bother me in the least to buy them for a second time, especially at a bargain price.  I have been waiting for this excuse to play them again, and it has arrived just in time.  Happy early birthday to me!

Addendum: In poking around on the web a bit, I’ve found that Eurogamer has a nice comparison of the original and new versions of the games, and I’ve also found an interesting annotation someone did across all of Ico.

Serious Sam 3 – Helpline Hilarity (Updated: PC Delayed)

I have long loved the Serious Sam series for being a completely ridiculous and over-the-top FPS that seems to be far too rare.  I would give up any number of cover-based, 2-gun, Xtreme-yet-realistic shooters for there to be another Serious Sam, but luckily I don’t have to!  Serious Sam 3 will be out October 18th November 22nd for PCs, and can already be preordered on Steam (thanks to my brother for getting it for me for my birthday!), and if these “help line” trailers are anything to judge by, it’s going to be exactly the game I want it to be.  Oh, and don’t forget the 16-player co-op campaign, in addition to tons of PvP options, if you like playing with your friends!  The three great videos are after the break. Deus Ex: Human Revolution – PC Patch Notes (09/15/2011)

When there is a PC version of a cross-platform game, there is often some worry about whether it will be good, and whether it will be supported after release.  In most cases, the answer is “no” to both of these, but Deus Ex: HR is fantastic on the PC, and I’m pleased to say that a patch has just been released that resolves the following issues (and adds windowed mode, including fullscreen windowed, which I particularly appreciate with multiple monitors): Continue reading

Max Payne 3 – Debut Trailer – March 2012

As soon as I heard the strings at the start of this trailer, I got that tingle that reminded me just how much I loved Max Payne 1 & 2.  It looks like Max has gotten a bit of the Bruce Willis hairdo treatment, but the voice actor sounds the same, so I can’t wait!  It should come out in March 2012 for the PC (I hope it feels like the primary platform, considering its lineage), PS3 and 360.

Starcraft II Match Highlight – SeleCT vs oGsMC

Starcraft II is a game that I am much better at watching than I am at playing.  Given that, I plan to regularly highlight games that I consider enjoyable.  This particular game is SeleCT vs oGsMC on Metalopolis.  I believe it is match 1 from season 1, week 9 of the NASL, and it is cast by HDStarcraft.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record – Why I Will Buy and Play This Again!

You might be wondering: “Didn’t Dead Rising 2 just come out a year ago?  Why are they releasing it again?”  Those are good questions, but the answers are Frank West and Sandbox Mode:

They are also reducing load times by 50% and reportedly improving the co-op features.  I call dibs on Frank in co-op!

Tropico 4 – ¡El Presidente Returns!

Everyone’s favorite game of click on your construction office and wondering why no one there feels like working is back for another installment! I have to admit that I’m not a lifelong fan of the series. I picked up Tropico 3 during a Steam sale a few months back simply because I’d heard good things about it, and because it was a measly five dollars at the time. Boy did I get my money’s worth.

For those of you who are as unfamiliar with Tropico as I was not too long ago, it’s a construction and management simulation type game where you play the role of the fully-customizable and often ridiculous dictator El Presidente. You are given the task of developing your island nation into a thriving economic powerhouse filled to the brim with golden statues dedicated to your greatness. Basically, for all you old nerds like myself, this is a spiritual successor to Sim Isle mixed up with some cold war era Cuban flare and a soundtrack that will make you crave burritos like nothing else. It’s awesome, trust me. Continue reading
